Gadwāl is the headquarters of Jogulamba Gadwal district in southern Telangana. It lies in the doab, the stretch of land between the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers, where flat farmland reaches in every direction and roads lead to villages across the plain.
At the centre stands the Gadwal fort, the seat of the former local rulers. On the map it is a compact enclosure that the older streets wrap around. The lanes in this part of town are narrow and irregular. Farther out, the blocks become larger and more open, and the railway and main roads cut straighter lines across the landscape.
The town is best known for Gadwal saris, a handloom tradition recognised with a geographical indication. They are known for cotton bodies woven with silk borders. A Gadwāl map poster shows the weaving town from above, with the fort at its heart and the streets spreading out in loose rings.
The historic fort sits at the centre of town. Its compact outline anchors the map, and the oldest streets circle around it.
Close to the fort, narrow and winding lanes make a dense, irregular texture. It contrasts with the straighter roads of the newer districts.
Beyond town, open land between the Krishna and Tungabhadra reaches outward. Roads to nearby villages cross it in long lines.
