Gainesville lies in north-central Florida, away from the coast, in a landscape of oak woodland, lakes and wetlands. The map is centred on the University of Florida, whose large campus fills much of the south-western part of the city with curving roads, open lawns and Lake Alice. To the east, the older downtown forms a compact grid, and residential neighbourhoods spread out beneath a dense tree canopy.
Just south of the city lies Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, a wide savanna and wetland where wild horses and bison roam. North of the city, the Devil's Millhopper is a deep sinkhole with small waterfalls running down its sides. Gatorade was developed at the University of Florida in 1965 and named after its sports teams, the Gators.
