Galata stands on the northern shore of the Golden Horn, facing the historic peninsula of Istanbul. In the late Byzantine period it was a walled Genoese trading colony, and the Galata Tower, completed in the fourteenth century, still rises above the district. Its streets climb steeply from the waterfront at Karaköy towards Beyoğlu on the ridge above.
On a map, water frames the district on two sides: the Golden Horn in front and the Bosphorus opening to the east. The Galata Bridge crosses to Eminönü, and the newer metro bridge spans the inlet a little upstream. The streets between are short and angled, and where the slope gets too steep they often turn into stairways.
Galata also has one of the oldest underground railways in the world, the Tünel funicular, which opened in 1875 and links Karaköy with the upper town. The Kamondo Stairs, with their curving flights, are a small but well-known detail. A Galata map poster turns this layered hillside into a graphic of bridges, quays and tightly packed lanes around the tower.
The bridge across the Golden Horn draws a bold straight line between Karaköy and Eminönü and ties Galata to the old city on the opposite shore.
The round stone tower stands near the top of the district, with streets fanning out around its base, which makes it a natural visual centre for the composition.
Quays, ferry piers and busy roads line the shore at the foot of the hill and form a firm edge between the dense lanes and the open water.

Ko e hā ʻa Galata
Galata appeals to anyone who has walked up from the ferry to the tower, lived in Beyoğlu or crossed the bridge at dusk. The water and the hill give the map a strong composition that feels complete even at the smaller print sizes.
Add your own title and subtitle, perhaps the date of a trip or an anniversary, edit the coordinates line and choose one of five styles. Blueprint emphasises the bridges and quays, while Noir turns the water into a deep, dark field.
