Gatesville is the seat of Coryell County, set in the rolling ranch country west of Waco. Its map follows a classic Texas arrangement: a courthouse square at the centre, a grid of residential streets running outward, and highways leaving town toward the neighbouring counties. The Leon River loops past close to town, adding a soft, meandering line to an otherwise orderly plan.
The town takes its name from Fort Gates, a frontier army post established nearby in the 1840s. The military connection continues today with Fort Cavazos, formerly Fort Hood, to the south. Gatesville is also known for its cluster of state correctional facilities, and it has long called itself the spur capital of Texas, thanks to a large collection of cowboy spurs kept in the town.
A Gatesville map poster centred on the square shows the grid at its clearest, while a wider view picks up the river bends and the open land beyond. Blueprint gives the plan a crisp, surveyed look, and Classic black & white keeps it plain and honest, which suits a working county town.
The Coryell County Courthouse anchors a square block at the heart of town, and the surrounding grid of streets extends from it in the manner of many Texas county seats.
The Leon River winds past the town in loose, looping bends, bringing an irregular line of water into the otherwise rectilinear street pattern.
Highways leave Gatesville in several directions across open country, drawing long, thin strokes that give the map its sense of a town at the centre of a wide county.
