Geesthacht sits on the north bank of the Elbe, some thirty kilometres upstream of central Hamburg, where the sandy upland known as the Geest drops steeply towards the river. On a map the contrast is immediate: a compact network of residential streets on the higher ground, and below it a flat band of marsh, meadow and water. The town takes its name from that ridge, and the slope is still the organising line of its plan.
The river is the dominant shape. The Geesthacht weir stretches across the Elbe here, the only barrage on the river in Germany, separating the tidal water flowing to the North Sea from the calmer stretch upstream. Beside it runs one of the largest fish passes in Europe. West along the bank lies Krümmel, where Alfred Nobel set up a dynamite factory in the 1860s, a chapter of industrial history the town still remembers.
A Geesthacht map poster reads almost like a cross-section laid flat: the dense lines of the town, the steep contour of the slope, the wide pale river and the open marshland on the far bank. It works well in black and white because the landscape itself is built from strong, simple bands, and the weir gives the composition a single clean line to anchor it.
The weir crosses the full width of the Elbe and marks the upstream limit of the tides. On the map it appears as a crisp line cutting the river, with locks and the fish pass alongside.
The town is built along the edge of the Geest, a sandy upland that falls sharply to the river. Streets bunch on the high ground and thin out towards the marsh below.
West of the centre, Krümmel lines the bank where Nobel produced dynamite in the nineteenth century. Today the stretch mixes industrial sites and woodland along the curving shore.

Ko e hā ʻa Geesthacht
People hang Geesthacht for the river as much as the town: a childhood on the slope above the Elbe, a first flat, years of weekend rides along the dike path. The map holds all of that in a few strong lines that stay legible from across a room.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example a family name and the year you moved in, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the engineering of the weir, while Paper keeps the marshland soft.
