Geretsried lies south of Munich in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, on a plateau above the valley of the Isar. The town is long and spread out, with residential areas separated by strips of woodland. On the map, its streets form several distinct clusters along the main roads, surrounded by forest.
Geretsried's history is unusual for Bavaria. Much of the town grew after the Second World War on the site of former wartime industrial facilities. Many new residents were refugees and expellees from Central and Eastern Europe. It received town status in 1970 and has since become the largest town in its district.
A Geretsried map poster shows this unusual origin in its form. It has no single historic core. Instead, residential areas are spread along the roads, broken up by forest, with the Isar valley nearby. The layout makes for an interesting and quite distinctive composition.
