Gingee Map Poster
Gingee, also known as Senji, lies in the Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, inland from Puducherry. The town is defined by its setting. Three steep granite hills rise nearby: Rajagiri, Krishnagiri and Chandrayandurg. The walls of Gingee Fort once connected all three, enclosing a large triangular area that still shows clearly from above.
Built up and extended across several centuries under a series of South Indian rulers, the fort was so difficult to take that the British called it the Troy of the East. Inside the walls are temples, granaries, a tank and the long stairways climbing Rajagiri, with ramparts following the hill contours.
The modern town lies beside the fortress, a busy crossroads of streets and markets on the roads toward Tiruvannamalai and the coast. A Gingee map poster shows both. The fort's great enclosure sits alongside the everyday street grid of the town that grew in its shadow.

The long walls
