Gioia Tauro lies on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, at the centre of the plain that bears its name. The town stands on a low rise near the mouth of the Petrace river, overlooking the sea. Inland, the Piana di Gioia Tauro stretches towards the Aspromonte massif, covered in olive groves and citrus orchards.
The most striking feature on any map of the area is the port. It was built as a long artificial canal cut into the coast north of the town. It is one of the largest container transshipment hubs in the Mediterranean, where cargo moves between large ocean ships and smaller vessels.
