Gobō is a small city on the western coast of the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture, facing the open water south of the Kii Channel. It lies where the Hidaka River reaches the sea, and the flat land of the river mouth holds most of the town. Behind it, forested hills rise quickly towards the interior.
On a map the river is the strongest element: a wide channel running to the coast, crossed by bridges, with the town on its banks. Streets form a close, uneven grid on the flat ground, while the coastline adds a long curved edge. Rail and main roads run parallel to the shore, and small valleys lead inland into the hills.
A Gobō map poster shows a typical Japanese coastal town, with river, sea, a narrow plain and steep green slopes close by. It suits people from Wakayama, travellers who came along the Kinokuni coast, and anyone who likes maps where water and land make an equal share of the design.
The river widens as it reaches the sea, cutting the map in two and giving it a strong diagonal line crossed by bridges.
The shore draws a long clean edge along the frame, with the sea left as open space that balances the dense town streets.
Inland, the streets stop abruptly where the forested hills begin, and only a few roads follow narrow valleys further in.

The map works as a keepsake of a hometown on the Kii coast, a remembered stop on a Wakayama trip, or simply as a clean study of a river meeting the sea.
