Goshogawara lies on the Tsugaru Plain in western Aomori Prefecture. The Iwaki River runs past the town on its way north to Lake Jūsan, a lagoon near the Sea of Japan. On a map, the town centre is a compact grid surrounded by a wide, regular pattern of rice paddies, irrigation channels and farm roads that stretch across the plain.
The town is known for the Tachineputa festival, in which giant illuminated figures, several storeys high, are paraded through the streets each August. Since the 2005 merger, the city has also included Kanagi, the birthplace of the writer Osamu Dazai, whose family home is now a museum.
A Goshogawara map poster shows a landscape defined by agriculture and water. The river, the field grid and the town's own streets form layers of lines, becoming lighter toward the edges of the sheet. It is a calm, open map suited to a quiet wall.
The river runs past the town and continues north toward Lake Jūsan. On the poster it forms a long, gently curving line across the flat plain.
Around the town, rice paddies and irrigation channels form a large, regular pattern. On the map it reads as a second, finer grid spreading out from the streets.
The main streets form a compact centre, which fills with the giant Tachineputa figures during the summer festival. On the poster the core stands out against the open fields.
