Grand Rapids takes its name from the rapids on the Grand River, Michigan's longest, which flows north to south through the centre of the city before turning west toward Lake Michigan. The rapids themselves were largely submerged by dams in the past, but the river still divides downtown into two banks linked by a series of road and pedestrian bridges, including the blue-painted Blue Bridge.
In the late nineteenth century the city became known as Furniture City for its concentration of furniture makers, and it remains a centre for office furniture and design. It is also home to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, set on the west bank, and to the ArtPrize art competition, which spreads across downtown.
A Grand Rapids map poster shows the river as the city's central line, with the downtown grid gathered close on either side and older neighbourhoods such as Heritage Hill rising to the east. Highways circle and cross the core, and the regular Midwestern grid extends outward in every direction.
The river cuts straight through the middle of downtown, a broad, clean band on the map with bridges crossing it at close intervals between the east and west banks.
East of downtown, this historic residential district climbs a gentle slope, its streets tighter and more irregular than the surrounding grid, reflecting nineteenth-century development.
I-196 and US-131 meet near the city centre, their curving ramps forming a strong knot on the map just west and south of downtown.
