Gujrat lies in northern Punjab, in the fertile land between the Jhelum and Chenab rivers, with the Chenab flowing a short distance to the south. The land around it is flat and intensively farmed, crossed by canals and village roads. On a map the city forms a dense, irregular mass of streets, with main roads leading out across the plain toward neighbouring towns.
The historic core has narrow, winding lanes and closely packed blocks, typical of older Punjabi towns, and later neighbourhoods extend outward in straighter lines. The Grand Trunk Road, the ancient route across northern South Asia, passes the city, as does the main railway line.
