Gunzenhausen lies on the Altmühl river in Middle Franconia, Bavaria. On a map the old town forms a compact oval of streets near the river, surrounded by later neighbourhoods. Just northwest of town lies the Altmühlsee, a large reservoir created as part of the Franconian Lake District, and its broad shape gives the map a dominant feature.
The town has a long history. The Roman frontier known as the Limes, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, passes through the area, and the town centre keeps parts of its medieval walls and towers. Today the Altmühlsee has made Gunzenhausen a popular base for sailing, cycling and walks along the water.
