Gwa is on the southern coast of Rakhine State in Myanmar, where the land meets the Bay of Bengal. The map is shaped by water. A river winds out to the sea close to the town, and the coastline runs north and south in a long, gently curving line of beach and inlets.
The town itself is small. It is a modest cluster of streets near the river, with roads leading inland across low, green country towards the hills of the Rakhine Yoma.
