Harar sits on a hilltop in eastern Ethiopia, and its old core is enclosed by the Jugol, a wall built in the sixteenth century. Inside, the plan is very dense: narrow, winding alleys between compound houses, small squares and a large number of mosques and shrines. From above, it looks almost like a maze.
Harar has long been a centre of Islamic learning and trade in the Horn of Africa, and it is often called one of the holiest cities in Islam. The walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The French poet Arthur Rimbaud lived here as a trader in the 1880s, and a house associated with him is now a museum.
Outside the walls, newer streets are wider and more regular. The contrast between the two is the strongest feature of a Harar map poster. At night, the hyena feeding just outside the walls has become one of the city's best-known traditions.
The historic wall encircles the old city in an irregular loop, with gates where the old routes enter the town.
Within the walls, alleyways twist and branch between compounds, forming one of the densest street patterns in Africa.
Wider modern streets spread beyond the wall, so the compact historic core stands out clearly as a single dense shape.

Ko e hā ʻa Harar
Harar is very distinctive, both for Ethiopians and for travellers who have followed its alleys. A print of the walled city is a thoughtful keepsake of a place with a strong identity.
Set your own title, subtitle and coordinates, and choose from five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the colour of the old town's walls.
