Harstad lies on the northeastern coast of Hinnøya, the largest island along the Norwegian coast. On a map, the town is a strip of streets pressed between the Vågsfjorden and the steep ground behind. The harbour is at the centre, with quays and piers reaching into the water. Residential streets climb the slope in terraces and fan out along the shore in both directions.
North of the centre is Trondenes, with its medieval stone church, often described as the northernmost medieval church of its kind still in use, and nearby wartime coastal gun batteries. Harstad is also home to the Festival of Northern Norway, an arts festival held each summer. The town has long relied on its harbour and has strong links to the offshore and maritime sectors.
A Harstad map poster is shaped by the coastline. The fjord's jagged edge and the islands across the water give the composition strong contours, while the town's streets form a fine, dense band along the shore. It shows well how northern Norway puts settlements between sea and mountain.
The fjord runs along the whole town, and the shoreline is broken by quays and small bays. This edge gives the poster its most defining line.
North of the centre, the Trondenes headland juts into the water. The medieval church stands there, and the headland adds a distinct shape at the edge of the map.
Streets climb the slope above the harbour in stepped rows. From above they form parallel curves that follow the rising land.

Ko e hā ʻa Harstad
Harstad is a place people remember through its light and water: the harbour, the fjord, the mountains across it. A map poster keeps that geography on the wall, whether you grew up there, served there or visited during the festival.
