Seen from above, Heemstede is a green town. It sits on an old beach ridge running along the Dutch coast, right against the southern edge of Haarlem, and much of its map is taken up by wooded estates rather than streets. Houses fill the land between those parks along curving lanes and short avenues. The street pattern feels planned but unhurried, and the canopy of trees shows through almost everywhere.
The Leidsevaart runs through the western side in a long, ruler-straight line. It was dug in the seventeenth century for the horse-drawn barges that carried passengers between Haarlem and Leiden. To the east the ground drops toward the flat, reclaimed land of the Haarlemmermeer, and that change in height is easy to see on the map: the irregular, older fabric of the ridge gives way to the open geometry of the polder.
A Heemstede map poster picks up that contrast between woodland and settlement in fine black lines. The Groenendaal woods show up as a large open patch of paths, and the Binnenweg, the town's well-known shopping street, runs through the middle. The result is a quiet, balanced composition. It suits a place that has long been known as a green, residential neighbour to the city next door.

A large wooded estate whose winding footpaths and ponds show up on paper as a soft, irregular open space, very different from the residential streets around it.
The eastern edge of town marks the drop from the old beach ridge to reclaimed land. Organic lanes give way to straight drainage lines and rectangular fields.

Ko e hā ʻa Heemstede
People who grew up here, or who cycled its lanes every day, tend to remember Heemstede as a set of routes: along the canal, through the woods, down the Binnenweg. A map poster keeps that whole network in view in a way a photograph cannot.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line to mark a street, a family name or a moving date. Then pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, depending on the room and the frame.
