Heho lies on the Shan Plateau in eastern Myanmar, in a wide upland valley with hills on either side. The town itself is small, and on a map it reads as a modest cluster of streets along the main road, surrounded by fields that fill the flat ground between the ridges.
The most visible feature is the airfield. Heho's airport is the main air gateway to the Inle Lake area, and most visitors pass through on the road that runs from the runway toward Shwenyaung and the lake. The straight line of the runway contrasts sharply with the irregular pattern of farm plots and village tracks around it.
A Heho map poster is a study in open space: a long runway, a small town, a road leading off into the hills, and a patchwork of fields in between. It suits anyone who remembers landing on the plateau at the start of a journey through Shan State.
A long straight runway lies beside the town, the main air entry point for travellers heading to Inle Lake.
Fields cover the valley floor in an irregular patchwork, crossed by tracks linking the surrounding villages.
The main road leaves town toward the lake region, a clear line connecting Heho to the wider plateau.

For travellers, Heho is often the first view of Shan State from the air, and a map of it marks the start of a remembered journey. For locals, it is simply home on the plateau, recorded clearly.
