Helchteren is the northern part of the municipality of Houthalen-Helchteren in Belgian Limburg. It is smaller and more rural than its southern neighbour, and on a map it appears as a village centre with roads spreading into the countryside. Large areas of heath, pine forest and wet ground dominate the surroundings.
The area is part of the Kempen, a region of sandy soils where heath and conifer plantations long defined the landscape.
