Hemel Hempstead sits in the valley of the River Gade in Hertfordshire, around twenty-five miles northwest of central London. After 1946 it was designated one of Britain's post-war new towns, and the map still shows that plan: a series of self-contained neighbourhoods on the hillsides, each with its own curving streets, arranged around a linear town centre on the valley floor.
The old market town survives at the northern end of the centre, with its High Street and the Norman church of St Mary, while the new town stretches south along the valley. The Water Gardens, designed by landscape architect Geoffrey Jellicoe, run beside the shopping streets, and the Grand Union Canal crosses the south of the town along the valleys of the Bulbourne and Gade.
A Hemel Hempstead map poster shows how carefully the new town was organised, with neighbourhoods fitting into the contours of the hills and green spaces threading between them. It also includes the Magic Roundabout, a junction of six mini-roundabouts around a central loop, one of the town's best-known and most photographed road layouts.
Jellicoe's long, narrow gardens follow the River Gade through the town centre, forming a thin green and blue ribbon beside the shops and car parks.
At the northern end of the centre, the historic High Street and St Mary's church preserve the scale of the original market town that preceded the new town.
The canal runs through the south of the town near Boxmoor and Apsley, tracing a smooth line along the valley floor beside the river and railway.
