Hemmingen lies just south of Hanover, and on a map it reads as a group of separate settlements rather than one compact town. Several former villages, each with its own small core, sit among farmland and are joined by country roads, with the dense urban fabric of Hanover pressing in from the north.
To the east, the land drops toward the floodplain of the river Leine, a broad band of meadows, streams and woodland that stays largely free of building. That green margin gives Hemmingen a clear edge and separates it from the neighbouring towns on the far bank.
