Seen from above, Hennef is less a single town than a group of settlements. The centre sits on the flat floor of the Sieg valley, with its streets gathered around the railway and the main road. Dozens of smaller villages spread across the wooded slopes on either side. The river is the strongest line on the sheet, swinging in wide bends as it heads west toward Siegburg and the Rhine.
East of the centre, on a ridge above the river, lies Stadt Blankenberg, a medieval hill town with the remains of its castle and walls. On a map it reads as a tight knot of lanes on high ground. A small walled settlement on a spur above the Sieg, with castle ruins at its tip. Its compact medieval plan stands out clearly against the surrounding slopes and forest.
