Herzogenaurach sits in the valley of the Aurach, west of Erlangen and a short drive from Nuremberg. At its centre is a small medieval old town, oval in outline, whose line of former walls can still be traced in the street plan. Two surviving gate towers mark the old entrances, and the main street runs between them through the historic core.
The town is known worldwide as the home of both adidas and Puma. The Dassler brothers, Adi and Rudolf, split their shared shoe business in the late 1940s, and the two companies grew up on opposite sides of the Aurach. On a map their headquarters and campuses spread out around the compact old town. The adidas site occupies the grounds of a former military airfield.

Aurach valley
The small Aurach river runs through the valley below the old town. Its course, and the meadows along it, give the map a soft, curving line through the built-up area.
Rival campuses
The headquarters of adidas and Puma stand on either side of the town. The adidas campus, on a former airfield, is one of the largest shapes on the map.
