Hingorja lies in Khairpur District in Sindh, on the level plain east of the Indus. Like many towns in the region, it grew as a local centre for the farming communities around it. From above, its core is compact and closely built, with lanes that twist between houses and shops, and the edge of town gives way quickly to cultivated land.
The countryside is organised by water. Irrigation channels drawn from the Indus canal system run across the plain and divide it into long field parcels, and many rural roads follow these lines. Khairpur District is widely known for its date palms, and groves and orchards soften the pattern here and there, adding a gentler texture between canals and tracks.
