Hīrākud lies just upstream of Sambalpur in western Odisha, beside the dam that shares its name. Built across the Mahanadi river and completed in the 1950s, the Hirakud Dam is one of the longest earthen dams in the world, and with its dykes it stretches for many kilometres. On a map, the reservoir behind it is by far the largest feature, an irregular expanse of water that fills much of the frame.
The township grew as housing for the people who built and ran the dam, so the streets have a planned feel, with straightforward roads and residential blocks near the structure. Below the dam, the Mahanadi continues as a river again, flowing past Sambalpur toward the delta.
A Hīrākud map poster shows an unusual meeting of engineering and landscape. The dam draws a long straight line, the reservoir edge is jagged with inlets and islands, and the small town sits between them. The contrast between straight and irregular shapes makes the composition graphic.
The long earthen dam and its dykes cross the landscape as a firm, deliberate line, one of the few straight edges in the whole composition.
Behind the dam, the reservoir spreads into countless inlets and islands. It forms a large, intricate shape that dominates the upper part of the map.
The residential area near the dam follows a simple planned layout. Its modest grid is a quiet human counterpart to the scale of the water.

For people whose families worked on the dam or lived in the township, Hīrākud is a place of personal and national history. The map shows the dam, the water and the town together, which rarely fits in a single photograph.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the year you moved there or a family name, and choose one of five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
