Hoàn Kiếm is the central district of Hanoi, and its map is organised around the lake that gives it its name. Hoàn Kiếm Lake is a long, soft oval in the middle of the district, with the small Turtle Tower on an islet. The red Thê Húc bridge leads to Ngọc Sơn Temple, which stands on an island near the northern shore. Every other street seems to take its bearings from the water.
North of the lake lies the Old Quarter, a dense web of short, crooked streets traditionally named after the trades once practised on them. South and east of the lake, the French Quarter is entirely different, with broad, straight avenues, regular blocks and the Opera House. To the east the district reaches the dyke along the Red River, and Long Biên Bridge crosses the river at its northern edge.
A Hoàn Kiếm map poster shows two cities side by side: the intricate streets of the merchants' quarter and the planned colonial grid, joined by the lake between them. The contrast is sharp and easy to read, and it translates beautifully into fine black lines. Residents and visitors alike recognise this portrait of Hanoi's centre at once, even without a single label.
The oval lake sits at the centre of the district, with Turtle Tower on an islet and the red Thê Húc bridge crossing to Ngọc Sơn Temple.
North of the lake, a close web of narrow streets, many historically named after trades such as silk, silver or paper goods, forms the densest pattern on the poster.
To the south, long straight avenues and regular blocks laid out in the colonial era create a calm, ordered texture around the Opera House.

Hoàn Kiếm is where many visitors' memories of Hanoi are made, from dawn walks around the lake to coffee in the Old Quarter. For residents it is simply the centre of the city. Title the poster with a date, a name or a phrase in Vietnamese, and set the coordinates to the lake or a favourite street.
The dense Old Quarter looks particularly striking in Noir, while Classic black & white, Paper, Blueprint and Sand offer other moods. Get the $9 HD files in six print sizes without a watermark, or order a printed matte poster with an optional wooden frame.
