Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia, spreads across the flat Tumed plain, and the Daqing Mountains form a clear dark edge along its northern side. The flat ground leaves the city free to grow in straight lines. From above it reads as a generous grid of wide avenues and large blocks, with newer districts reaching east and south toward the airport.
Its name is usually translated from Mongolian as the Blue City. The older core lies south-west of the centre. There, the Dazhao Temple, a Buddhist monastery founded in the sixteenth century, and the nearby Xilitu Zhao sit within a denser pattern of lanes. East of the city, the Liao-era White Pagoda stands on open ground near the airport that shares its name.
Hohhot is also known as a centre of China's dairy industry, with some of the country's largest milk producers based here. Temple quarter
Around the Dazhao Temple and Xilitu Zhao, the old town keeps smaller blocks and narrower streets. This finer texture stands apart from the broad avenues around it.
