Homer Glen is a village in Will County, Illinois, in the southwestern suburbs of Chicago. It is one of the newer municipalities in the area, formed from what was mostly unincorporated farmland and subdivisions. On a map, the old Midwestern survey grid is still easy to see: major roads run straight north–south and east–west, a mile apart, dividing the land into large squares.
Inside each square, the pattern changes. Subdivisions of curving streets, loops and cul-de-sacs fill the land between the section-line roads, while open spaces, ponds and remaining farmland sit between them. The village has kept a relatively low density, and residents often describe it as having a more open, semi-rural feel than the suburbs closer to Chicago.
A Homer Glen map poster captures this layered pattern: a strict grid of long straight roads, filled with the soft curves of residential streets. It is a surprisingly graphic image. It makes a personal piece for families who have settled here and know which square on the grid is their own.
Main roads follow the old one-mile survey grid in straight lines. They divide the map into a regular chequerboard of large blocks.
Within each block, residential streets curve and loop. The soft shapes contrast neatly with the straight roads that frame them.
Retention ponds, parks and farmland are spread through the village. They leave open patches that keep the poster light and uncluttered.
