Homyel' sits on the right bank of the Sozh, and the river shapes the city's map. The historic centre rises on a high bank above the water, where the Rumyantsev-Paskevich palace and its landscaped park look out across the river to the flat, wooded floodplain on the other side. From above, the green of the park and the curve of the Sozh make the old core easy to spot.
Homyel' is the second-largest city in Belarus, and it has expanded well beyond the river. Wide Soviet-era avenues lead out to residential districts of large blocks, rail lines cross the city towards the country's southeast, and industrial zones occupy the edges. The Sozh
The river wraps along the city's eastern side, its wide floodplain and oxbows forming a soft, irregular counterpoint to the street grid.
