Houba is a small town in the north-east of Chongqing municipality, in the mountainous country north of the Yangtze. The landscape around it is steep and folded, so the town sits where the land is flattest, in a valley along a river. Its streets follow the curve of the water and the base of the slopes.
On a map, Houba is long and narrow rather than round, squeezed between hills. Roads leave the valley in tight switchbacks, climbing towards villages and terraced fields on the slopes.
