Huaibei grew quickly in the second half of the twentieth century as one of China's major coal-producing cities, and its street plan reflects that planned growth. Long straight avenues run across the flat Huaibei Plain and form a clear, regular framework of large blocks. Rail lines built to carry coal cross the urban area, adding diagonal and curving strokes to an otherwise orderly pattern.
The most distinctive shapes on a Huaibei map poster are its lakes. Over the decades, land that sank above worked-out coal seams filled with water, and the city has turned several of these areas into wetland parks. On paper they appear as broad, irregular shapes pressed against the grid. Their shorelines soften the edges of nearby districts and give the composition an unexpected openness.
To the north of the centre, the low Xiangshan hills rise above the plain, and their slopes are kept largely green as parkland. A regular grid, reclaimed water and a wooded ridge together make Huaibei a clear example of an industrial city reshaping itself. You can read that change from the arrangement of streets, water and open land alone.
Former mining ground has filled with water and become wetland parks. These large, irregular lakes interrupt the street grid and form the most striking shapes on the map.
A low wooded ridge rises on the city's northern side. It appears as a calm, open area where the regular street network stops at the foot of the slopes.
Wide, straight roads divide the flat plain into generous blocks. The result is a clear geometric framework typical of cities that grew quickly around industry.
