Hückelhoven is a town in the Heinsberg district in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia, close to the Dutch border. It sits on the edge of the Rur valley, with the river's wide, green floodplain to the west and gently rolling farmland to the east. The town grew from several formerly separate villages, so the map shows a cluster of centres rather than one core.
For most of the twentieth century Hückelhoven was defined by coal. The Sophia-Jacoba colliery operated here until 1997, one of the last hard coal mines in the Aachen area. The settlements built for its miners still appear on the map as tidy rows of workers' housing. A large spoil heap now stands beside the town as a green hill.
A Hückelhoven map poster shows a landscape reshaped by industry that is now quieter again. The Rur floodplain curves along one side, former mining land and settlements fill the centre, and fields spread out to the edges. Workers' streets, open green space and village cores together make a varied but balanced composition.
Rows of workers' housing built for the Sophia-Jacoba mine form orderly, repetitive street patterns that stand out from the older village lanes around them.
A large spoil heap left by mining rises beside the town. It is now planted and crossed by paths, and forms a distinctive rounded shape on the map.
To the west the Rur winds through a broad, green lowland of meadows and wetland, giving the map a soft, open edge.
