Humen is a town in Dongguan, set on the eastern bank of the Pearl River estuary in Guangdong. Its map is shaped by the water. There is the broad estuary, a network of tidal channels and creeks, and low-lying ground that has long been developed. Dense urban districts fill the land between these waterways, and major highways link them to the rest of the Pearl River Delta.
The town is closely tied to the start of the First Opium War. In 1839 the imperial commissioner Lin Zexu had large quantities of confiscated opium destroyed at Humen, an event commemorated locally. Coastal forts once guarded the channel. Today the Humen Bridge, a large suspension bridge completed in 1997, crosses the estuary to Guangzhou's Nansha district.
A Humen map poster pairs detailed industrial and commercial streets with a sweeping body of water. The long bridge reaches across the estuary, and the creeks break the land into pieces. The town is also known for its garment trade, and its busy grid contrasts with the wide, open channel beside it.

The wide mouth of the Pearl River takes up much of the map's western side. Its breadth sets off the dense town streets on the eastern bank.
Small waterways thread through the town and divide it into irregular blocks, a typical pattern of the delta's reclaimed and low-lying land.
