Hương Trà lies just northwest of the city of Huế in central Vietnam. It spans a transition in landscape. To the west, wooded hills rise toward the mountains. To the east lies the flat plain of the Hương River, also known as the Perfume River, with its rice fields, and further out the lagoons near the coast.
From above, the area is spread out rather than compact. Villages follow the river and the roads, and between them lie paddy fields, ponds and small canals. National Highway 1 passes through the district, the main route running the length of Vietnam, and the railway runs close to it. Both form strong lines across the soft pattern of fields.
Its name shares its first word with the Hương River, which flows through the area on its way to Huế and the sea. The former imperial capital, with its citadel and royal tombs, lies just next door. A Hương Trà map poster shows the countryside around one of Vietnam's most historic cities.

Highway and railway
National Highway 1 and the north–south railway cross the area in near-parallel lines. They are clear, straight marks among the fields and villages.
Paddy and hills
Rice fields cover the eastern plain, and wooded hills rise in the west. The land changes from flat, irrigated fields to rolling slopes.
