Ibadan spreads across a series of low hills in southwestern Nigeria, and from above it looks less like a planned city than a vast web of streets. The old centre is dense and irregular, with lanes packed closely around markets and family compounds. Beyond it, roads extend outward in long lines toward surrounding towns, and newer districts fill the land between them.
The city grew in the nineteenth century as a military settlement and became one of the largest cities in West Africa. Its hills give the map a varied texture, and on one of them Bower's Tower looks out over the rooftops. Ibadan is also home to the University of Ibadan, founded in 1948, whose campus forms a large green space north of the centre.
Cocoa House, built in the 1960s on the wealth of the cocoa trade, still stands in the centre as a reminder of the region's former prosperity.
