Iglesias lies in south-west Sardinia, in a basin surrounded by hills rich in minerals. The historic centre is compact, partly enclosed by stretches of medieval wall, with narrow streets and small squares around the cathedral of Santa Chiara. Newer districts spread outward onto flatter ground, and roads climb away into the hills toward old mining sites and the coast.
The town was founded in the Middle Ages under Pisan influence, originally known as Villa di Chiesa, and it was a centre of silver and lead mining for centuries. That mining history shaped the whole area, and today the landscape is dotted with old mine buildings and routes. Iglesias is also known for its Holy Week processions.
