Ikebukuro is one of the major centres of Toshima ward in northwest Tokyo. It is organised around Ikebukuro Station, which serves several JR, subway and private lines and ranks among the busiest stations in the world. On a map the tracks form a thick north–south spine, and the district spreads out east and west from it in two distinct halves.
The east side holds large department stores and, further out, Sunshine City, a complex whose Sunshine 60 tower was once the tallest building in Asia. Nearby Otome Road is known for its anime and manga shops. The west side has its own stores and theatres, the red-brick campus of Rikkyo University, and quieter residential lanes beyond.
Around the station the street grid is tight and irregular, full of short blocks, pedestrian lanes and elevated roads, including an expressway that runs past Sunshine City. An Ikebukuro map poster turns that density into fine texture, with the rail corridor as the one clear line holding the composition together.
The combined rail lines through Ikebukuro Station form a broad band down the middle of the map, dividing the district into its east and west sides.
East of the station, the large Sunshine City complex occupies its own superblock beside the elevated expressway. Its clear geometric footprint stands out among the smaller streets.
On the west side, the university campus appears as an open block with courtyards and lawns, a calm pocket in an otherwise tightly packed neighbourhood.
