Indore is the largest city in Madhya Pradesh and lies on the Malwa plateau, a flat upland that has let the city spread in almost every direction. From above, the old centre around the Rajwada, the seven-storey palace gateway of the Holkar rulers, is a tight cluster of lanes. Around it, later colonies and townships fan out in wider, more regular blocks.
Two small rivers, the Khan and the Saraswati, thread through the older districts, and the long Agra–Bombay Road runs across the city as its main commercial corridor. Indore has been ranked India's cleanest city in the national Swachh Survekshan survey several years running, and it is equally known for Sarafa, a jewellers' street that turns into a night food market after the shops close.
An Indore map poster shows how the city has grown outward from its compact historic heart, the lanes around the palace giving way to newer sectors and bypass roads. In black and white the pattern is easy to read: dense and old in the middle, looser and more planned towards the edges, with the two rivers as thin threads running between.
The streets around the Holkar palace form the densest part of the map, a tangle of short lanes and markets that contrasts sharply with the straighter roads built in later decades.
The Agra–Bombay Road cuts through Indore as a long, strong line, the city's main commercial spine and easy to follow from one edge of the poster to the other.
The two small rivers meet in the older part of the city, and their narrow courses print as fine lines weaving between neighbourhoods rather than as broad bands of water.
