Iquique occupies a thin coastal shelf in northern Chile, pressed between the Pacific Ocean and a steep wall of desert cliffs that rises hundreds of metres behind the city. On a map, it forms a long, narrow strip of streets running parallel to the shore, with the escarpment marking a hard edge inland and the town of Alto Hospicio perched on the plateau above.
The city grew rich during the nitrate boom of the late nineteenth century, and the wooden mansions of Baquedano Street still recall that period. Iquique is also known for Cerro Dragón, a huge sand dune that sits within the city, for the Zofri free trade zone and for the naval battle fought offshore in 1879.
An Iquique map poster captures one of South America's most striking urban settings. The coastline curves around beaches and a peninsula, the grid fills every usable metre of flat land, and the escarpment closes the frame. Few cities show so clearly how geography dictates form.
The city stretches along the Pacific in a long, narrow band, its streets running parallel to the shore between beaches, port and headland.
A steep cliff rises directly behind the city, cutting the street grid off sharply and giving the poster an unusually crisp inland boundary.
The large dune inside the city appears as an open area among the streets, a rare case of a sand dune shaping an urban map.
