Itoigawa stretches along the Sea of Japan coast in western Niigata Prefecture. From above, the town is a long, narrow band between the shoreline and the mountains, with the rail line, the coastal road and the expressway running side by side. Rivers flow straight down from the mountains to the sea, dividing the town into sections.
The city is known for jade: the Himekawa River carries jadeite from the mountains, and it has been worked in the area since prehistoric times. Itoigawa is also crossed by the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, a major geological boundary, and the area became one of Japan's first UNESCO Global Geoparks.
An Itoigawa map poster emphasises this long horizontal shape: the smooth coastline on one side, steep terrain on the other, and a series of river mouths breaking the line of the town. It is a map shaped by geology as much as by planning.
A long, gently curving shoreline runs along the entire northern edge, giving the map a strong horizontal baseline.
The river known for jade flows from the mountains to the sea, cutting a wide channel through the coastal plain.
Rail, road and expressway run in parallel along the narrow strip of flat land, forming a set of clean lines between sea and slopes.
