Itsukaichi lies in the far west of the Tokyo Metropolis, where the Kanto plain meets the forested mountains of the Okutama area. It was a separate town until 1995, when it merged with neighbouring Akita to form the city of Akiruno. On a map the old town follows the valley of the Aki River, with streets stretched along the valley floor.
The name means fifth-day market, after the regular markets once held here, and the long main street still reflects that trading past. An Itsukaichi map poster shows a place in between: the dense residential fabric of greater Tokyo on one side, and steep wooded hills that end the street grid on the other.
The JR Itsukaichi Line ends here, a short branch that ties the town to the rest of the metropolitan rail network. On the map the line, the river and the main road run roughly parallel, all squeezed together by the landform.
The Aki River runs along the town, and its valley shapes the long, narrow outline of the built area between hills and water.
The Itsukaichi Line ends here, and its short track links this edge of Tokyo to the wider metropolitan rail network.
Forested slopes rise directly behind the town. On the poster the street network stops abruptly where the dense green of the hills begins.
