Jacksonville sits in the open farmland of west-central Illinois, and from above it looks the way many Midwestern county seats do. A regular grid of streets is laid out around a central square, and the blocks loosen into wider residential lots toward the edges. Beyond them the fields start almost immediately, in the rectilinear pattern of the old land survey.
The town has long been tied to education. Illinois College, founded in 1829, is one of the oldest colleges in the state, and its campus forms a green block of irregular paths within the regular street pattern. Jacksonville is also home to state schools for deaf and visually impaired students, whose grounds show up on the map as larger open parcels.
A Jacksonville map poster works mostly through rhythm. The evenly spaced streets, the square at the middle and the rail lines crossing at angles give the print a quiet order. There is no river or coastline to organise the composition, so the grid carries it. That makes the design feel architectural, closer to a drafting sheet than a landscape.
Downtown streets converge on a public square, the fixed point from which the grid extends. On the poster it reads as a small open rectangle framed by denser commercial blocks.
The Illinois College campus breaks the grid with curving walks and open lawns, a softer patch of lines among the straight residential streets on the town's west side.
Railway corridors cut diagonally through the orthogonal blocks. These are the only lines that ignore the grid, and they add tension to an otherwise very regular composition.

For graduates of Illinois College, or for families with roots in Morgan County, this map is a reminder of a specific place and a particular time. The street pattern is simple enough to recognise at a glance and detailed enough to find a familiar house or corner.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example to add a graduation year or a family name. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. For $9 you get HD files in six print sizes, or you can order a printed poster.
