Jaitāran is a town in the Pali district of Rajasthan, in the semi-arid country between Jodhpur and Ajmer. From above, its oldest part is a tight cluster of narrow lanes, packed so closely that on a map they almost merge into a single dark shape. Newer streets around it are wider and more regular. Beyond them, a few roads head out in straight lines across flat farmland.
Many older towns in Rajasthan share this layout: a dense centre built for shade and closeness, and a looser ring of later growth around it. In Jaitāran the contrast is especially clear because the surrounding land is so open, which leaves the town as a sharp, dark mark on a pale page.
