Jam lies inland in Bushehr province, in the southern foothills of the Zagros mountains. From above, the town is a tight cluster of streets set in a valley between long, parallel ridges, with the dry terrain around it cut by seasonal watercourses that run only after rare rains.
The town has grown in recent decades partly because of its position near southern Iran's major gas and energy developments along the coast, which have brought new housing and roads. On the map, older, more irregular lanes near the centre sit beside newer districts with wider, straighter streets.
