Jangseong is a county in the north of South Jeolla Province, just beyond the city of Gwangju. Its main town lies in a valley on the Hwangnyong River, and on a map the settlement is compact, with a small street network around the railway station and a highway running along the valley floor.
The county is known for Baegyangsa, a Buddhist temple in the Naejangsan mountains famous for its autumn colours, and for Pilam Seowon, a Joseon-era Confucian academy included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Korean seowon. Jangseong Lake, a large reservoir, sits in the hills north of the town.
