Jawhar lies on the Shabelle River, north of Mogadishu, in the fertile lowlands of Middle Shabelle. The river shapes the map: it winds across the flat land, and the town sits near its banks, with roads and fields arranged in relation to the water.
In the early twentieth century, the area was developed as an Italian agricultural settlement known as Villaggio Duca degli Abruzzi, focused largely on sugar cane. Today Jawhar is the capital of the Middle Shabelle region, and the surrounding farmland still depends on the river for irrigation.
A Jawhar map poster shows a place defined by its river. The Shabelle's curves bring movement to the composition, while the town's streets form a denser cluster nearby. Irrigation lines and field edges extend across the flat land, giving the outer map a quiet, regular texture.
The river winds across the lowlands close to town, forming a flowing line that gives the map its central shape.
Streets gather into a compact area near the river, forming the densest part of the map and its main focal point.
Fields and irrigation channels spread across the flat land along the river, adding fine, regular lines to the surrounding space.
