Kafr ad Dawwār lies in the western Nile Delta in Beheira, a short distance southeast of Alexandria. The land is completely flat, and the map shows it: the town grows along straight transport lines rather than around hills or bends. A canal and the railway between Cairo and Alexandria run past it, and the streets arrange themselves in parallel bands along them.
In the twentieth century the town became a major centre of Egypt's textile industry, with large spinning and weaving works.
