Kaizuka lies in southern Osaka Prefecture, stretching from the shore of Osaka Bay inland to the Izumi mountains. From above, the city is a narrow strip: reclaimed industrial land along the coast, a dense band of streets and railways in the middle, and hills, farmland and reservoirs further south. Kansai International Airport sits on its island in the bay a short distance away.
The historic core grew as a jinaimachi, a temple town built around the Gansen-ji temple, and parts of its old street pattern remain. Kaizuka is also remembered for the Nichibo Kaizuka women's volleyball team, whose players formed the core of the Japanese team that won Olympic gold in Tokyo in 1964.
A Kaizuka map poster shows how a Japanese coastal city runs from sea to mountains. The contrast between straight reclaimed land, the dense old town and scattered ponds inland gives the print a clear, layered structure.
The historic district around Gansen-ji keeps a tight street pattern. On the poster it forms a distinct, fine-grained area near the centre.
Along Osaka Bay, flat reclaimed land has straight edges and large industrial plots, creating a sharp geometric boundary with the water.
Toward the hills, small irrigation ponds are scattered among fields. On the map they appear as many small shapes of open water.
