Kalabahi lies on Alor Island in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province, at the inner end of a long, narrow bay that cuts deep into the island. From above, the town is pressed between the water and steep hills, its streets filling a small area of flatter ground along the shore.
As the administrative centre of the Alor regency, Kalabahi is the island's main port and market town. Alor is known for the clarity of its surrounding waters, which draw divers, and for its moko, bronze drums of great cultural value that are held as heirlooms and used in traditional exchange.
A Kalabahi map poster captures the drama of the setting: a long channel of sea, a town clustered at its head and hills rising steeply behind. The coastline makes a strong outline, while roads wind up the slopes and along the bay. It is a distinctive map of a remote island port.
The long, narrow bay reaches far inland, giving the map a dramatic channel of water that leads straight to the town at its head.
Hills rise sharply behind the town, so streets are confined to the flatter shoreline and climb in curves where they extend inland.
The waterfront is the town's working edge, with the port and shoreline roads forming a clear line where land meets the bay.

Kalabahi suits divers who explored Alor's waters, travellers who reached this far corner of Indonesia, and families from the island living elsewhere. The long bay makes a bold, memorable composition.
