Kangar is the capital of Perlis, the smallest state in Malaysia, in the far northwest of the peninsula near the Thai border. The town lies on flat ground in the middle of rice-growing country. Its centre is compact, with a small grid of streets, and newer roads and neighbourhoods extend outward into the paddies.
The land around Kangar is some of the flattest in the region, divided into rice fields by long straight irrigation channels and bunds. Here and there, limestone hills rise abruptly from the plain, which on a map appear as isolated shapes surrounded by open fields. A river runs through the area toward the coast.
As a state capital, Kangar houses government buildings and serves as the main town for Perlis. It remains modest in size, which suits a clear and uncluttered print. A Kangar map poster shows a quiet capital surrounded by an agricultural landscape of straight lines and open space.
The town centre is small and regular, a dense cluster of streets that forms the focal point of the map.
Fields surround the town on all sides, divided by straight channels and paths into a fine, repeating grid.
Steep hills rise from the flat plain in the wider area, standing out as irregular solid shapes against the open fields.

For people from Perlis, or anyone who has travelled through northern Malaysia toward Thailand, Kangar is a familiar crossroads. Its small grid and open fields make a calm, uncluttered poster.
